Skincare Update: New Study Links DermaVeratrol Ingredients to Cancer Prevention - Exec Digital (press release)

MIDDLETOWN, CT--(Marketwire - March 22, 2012) - Products that reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots are frequently referred to as "anti-aging" products. However, that phrase has a whole new meaning, thanks to a recent study that suggests some of these products might actually help extend a life. The study tests three common antioxidants, each one a common ingredient in skin creams, and finds that their medicinal effects are far ranging. They might even help prevent the spread of cancer. One of these antioxidants, resveratrol, is a key ingredient in the popular skin cream DermaVeratrol.

In fact, DermaVeratrol has long championed its own use of resveratrol. The ingredient is said to have a major impact in clearing up the skin, and eliminating visible signs of age. But a new study from the National Institutes of Health reveals that the antioxidant has many other uses. It is also a powerful agent for killing dangerous, disease-spreading cells -- including cancer cells.

Of course, the fact that resveratrol kills rather than protects cells points to a wide array of implications. The same study that purports it to be useful in battling cancer cautions against using it to treat other diseases, like diabetes.

This antioxidant has been connected to cancer research ever since 1997, when it was discovered to treat cancer in laboratory rats. Subsequent studies have largely confirmed its medical benefits. In addition, antioxidants like resveratrol have traditionally been thought to soak up free radicals, thus repairing damaged skin -- hence its inclusion in skin creams such as DermaVeratrol.

The hope for this study is that the new resveratrol findings will ultimately lead to improvements in cancer drugs. Researchers herald it as a much safer treatment option than chemotherapy, but, in addition to its safety, it also offers a high level of potency. In fact, the study confirms that this antioxidant has the capacity to kill cancer cells that are typically resistant to drugs.

DermaVeratrol is an anti-aging product that has come to be associated with its largely natural ingredients. These ingredients include a range of vitamins, as well as substances that promote the development of collagen. Resveratrol is its most-publicized ingredient, and is itself found in many naturally occurring foods, among them red grapes and red wine.

ABOUT:

DermaVeratrol is an anti-aging product that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The product is made with a variety of vitamins, antioxidants, and naturally occurring ingredients, among them resveratrol. Additionally, DermaVeratrol is able to moisturize the skin, improving the health of the complexion and safeguarding against new signs of aging. Two common acne drugs are now being used together in a new therapy studied at ... - WXYZ

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) - People who are dealing with a troubling acne problem now have a new therapy they can try.

The regimen involves using two common acne medications at the same time ? the oral antibiotic doxycyclin and the topical ointment called Epiduo Gel. The gel contains adapalene and benzoyl peroxide.

?I don?t even recognize myself,? smiled Erica Epstein.  The 17-year-old started using the therapy five months ago after battling acne since she was 12.

?My skin is really clear.  I get the occasional kind of little blemish. But compared to what it was, it?s a complete transformation,? said Epstein.

Henry Ford Hospital was one of 34 treatment centers in the U.S. and Canada involved in a study of the combination therapy.  It was the only hospital in Michigan to take part.

The study involved 459 patients.  Of those, 76% received the regimen of Epiduo Gel and doxycycline as initial therapy for 12 weeks, then Epiduo Gel as maintenance therapy for 24 weeks.  That group showed the highest reduction in acne lesions.

Fifty-percent of those people said the combination therapy cleared or nearly cleared their acne lesions.

?It?s a nice treatment regimen, and what?s interesting is that it?s actually changed the way I practice medicine,? said Dr. Linda Stein Gold ? Director of Clinical Research at Henry Ford Hospital , co-author of the study, and Division Head of Dermatology at Henry Ford?s West Bloomfield satellite.

?Now because of the data and because in the study we were able to get patients off of oral antibiotics pretty quickly, I now try that [regimen] more in my practice,? she added.

?I explain to my patients?that you don?t have to be on antibiotics for years at a time or even six months,? said Dr. Stein Gold.

Dr. Stein Gold said side effects include dryness and irritation in the first two weeks.

The topical is a brand name, so patients may need to make sure their insurance can cover the cost of the gel.  The oral medication is generic doxycycline.

The findings are from the Acne Combination Evaluation Study in Severe Patients I and II clinical studies.

The results are published in the February issues of the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology and Journal of Dermatological Treatment.

Galderma Announces Completion of Phase 3 Trials of Investigational Drug ... - MarketWatch (press release)

FORT WORTH, TX, Mar 21, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Galderma Laboratories, L.P. today announced the completion of two independent Phase 3 clinical trials that evaluated the efficacy and safety of CD07805/47, a proprietary topical gel under investigation in adults with moderate to severe facial erythema (redness) of rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory and vascular condition of the face and eyes characterized by persistent erythema, flushing, inflammatory lesions and visible blood vessels that affects at least 16 million Americans(1) and with estimates of prevalence ranging from less than 1% to more than 20% of the adult population in other countries globally.(2)

The results of the two randomized, vehicle-controlled, multicenter Phase 3 trials that investigated the efficacy and safety of CD07805/47 applied topically once daily vs. vehicle (control) in adult patients with moderate to severe facial erythema of rosacea confirmed results observed in prior Phase 2 studies.

"The facial erythema associated with rosacea can have a negative psychosocial impact on patients, giving rise to anxiety and creating low self-confidence and embarrassment," said Joseph F. Fowler, M.D., Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Louisville. "Novel therapeutic approaches to address this can provide a significant impact on patient care."

"Galderma is committed to partnering with healthcare providers to drive innovation and develop treatments for patients with dermatologic conditions," said Francois Fournier, President of Galderma Laboratories, L.P. "These results are encouraging because this investigational treatment has the potential to one day address unmet needs in this highly prevalent condition."

Galderma intends to submit a New Drug Application for CD07805/47 to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and to the European Medicines Agency.

Rosacea(3)

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory and vascular disorder affecting the face. The characteristic skin lesions (erythema, visible blood vessels, papules and pustules) appear in the middle of the face (forehead, nose, cheeks) between the ages of 20 and 50, but typically are most common in men and women after 30.(1)

The pathophysiology of rosacea is poorly understood and may be multifactorial, involving vascular reactivity and immune system responses. Many of the most cited pathogenic theories on the etiology of rosacea focus on abnormalities in cutaneous vascular homeostasis. These theories are based on the prominent transient and non-transient facial erythema observed in a majority of patients with rosacea. Disease manifestations are thought to arise from cutaneous vasomotor instability, the term commonly used to refer to abnormal involuntary dilatation and reactivity of small subcutaneous resistance arteries. The etiology of vasomotor instability in patients with rosacea is unknown. Triggers for the condition may include spicy food, alcohol, weather changes, sun, and hot showers, which often have a negative impact on the patients' social life. Stinging, burning, sensitivity of the skin and inability to tolerate cosmetics are also very common, and in some cases, the eyes can become red, dry and itchy. If left untreated, the condition may worsen.(2)

Shame on Helena Rubinstein Cosmetics For Making Demi Moore Look Like A 19-Year-Old - BlissTree

Remember what Demi Moore looked like just last month when she was admitted into rehab for a suspected eating disorder? Her gaunt and unhealthy-looking face and body had many people worried. Well now she is apparently the new cover girl for Helena Rubinstein cosmetics in a series of ads that have been photoshopped beyond belief, making Demi virtually unrecognizable. Seriously, would you have guessed it was Demi in these shots?

The 49-year-old is portrayed here with flawless youthful skin that is not close to being realistic?even for a 19 year-old. Plus, we all know (and love) Demi?s face just the way it was. Up until her eating disorder and strange ?whip-it? incident, she has always been a healthy role model for what women can really look like in their 40s if they take care of themselves. We loved the fine lines and wrinkles she carried because it was symbolic of a woman who wasn?t afraid of her age and beauty. But thanks to photoshop, all of that has been stripped away leaving us with someone we don?t even know anymore. Sigh.

Not everyone agrees though. The Mirror reports that they think she looks ?amazing? and suspects this is her way of getting back at Ashton Kutcher for cheating on her:

After an awful few months that have involved her being admitted to hospital and splitting up with her husband, Demi Moore is back at work and looking amazing in these new shots for Helena Rubinstein.

They went on to say:

After her break-up from Ashton ? he was accused of cheating on her ? Demi was spotted looking gaunt and stressed out. So it?s even more lovely to see her looking glamorous and healthy (if a tad airbrushed) in these new shots.

A ?tad airbrushed?? Come on.

Shame on any cosmetics company, of all places, who does this. Like we?re really supposed to believe Helena Rubinstein is a reputable, trustworthy brand when they essentially lie to us like this?

Tell us what you think.

With 1,400 new anti-aging skin products launched in 2011, it's clear what's on our minds -- and on our faces. As boomers age, it's no surprise that products promising to disguise that process represent the fastest growing sector of the cosmetics industry, roughly $7 billion a year.

Millions of dollars are being spent to develop treatments for issues ranging from dry skin to brown spots, blotching and redness, fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and collagen deficiencies. Some promise to replace cosmetic surgery procedures, although most doctors would disagree. The majority of products claim to make visible improvements that can prolong the illusion of youth and therefore enable users to postpone medical procedures they may be contemplating.

Every major cosmetics company and many specialty firms whose claim to fame is a proprietary ingredient are engaged in fierce competition. To some degree, they have been successful. The days of simple moisturizers are long gone as multitasking products combine ingredients to target several skin-care issues at once. The science behind these products is both impressive and evasive, with companies using everything from mushrooms to vitamin C, from glacial water to flower extracts.

"The whole industry is really confusing for consumers because the FDA doesn't really control these products. They are considered cosmetic so they don't fall under their purview," says Leo McCafferty, a board-certified plastic surgeon, chairman of the Allegheny County Medical Society and president-elect of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

"Some do work, but the question is: Do they work for you? A lot of it depends on your skin type. There needs to be some rationale for how you pick what you use."

Certainly buying products from reputable companies is a start. So is understanding that there is no such thing as a miracle. While much can be done to improve skin tone and luminosity, nothing will make anyone look 20 again, or stay frozen at 40. That said, many of the products we tested showed visible results, though none are as effective as prescription formulas, lasers, certain peels or surgery.

New research about facial recognition turns common wisdom on its head - PhysOrg.com

Their study, which goes against the common belief that brains process faces "holistically," appears this month in .

In addition to shedding light on the way the brain functions, these results may help scientists understand rare facial recognition disorders.

Humans are great at recognizing faces. There are even regions in the brain that are specifically associated with face perception ? the most well-known one is the fusiform gyrus in the temporal lobe.

Common wisdom has it that humans recognize the face "holistically," meaning that there is something about the picture created by the entire face ? the particular arrangement of a face's eyes, nose, and mouth and not just these features themselves ? that makes it easier for the human brain to make a positive ID.

That common wisdom appears to be wrong.

"There is this belief that faces are special," said the study's coauthor Bosco Tjan, associate professor of psychology at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. "But why? How is the face special?"

To use an automotive metaphor, would it be easier for a car aficionado to identify a '58 Corvette by its distinctive quad headlights, chunky chrome grille and swoop on the side ? or if shown the car that all these pieces make when added together?

Tjan and collaborators Jason M. Gold, associate professor of psychology at Indiana University, Bloomington and IU undergraduate student Patrick J. Mundy tested participants on how accurately they were able to identify a set of faces by the parts of those ? the nose, left eye, right eye or mouth.

Then, using a well-established formula that Tjan developed in an earlier study, the researchers extrapolated how accurately each participant should be able to identify an entire face.

If humans were better at face recognition than nose or eye recognition, one would expect each participant to do a better job of identification when the features are all arranged together into a face. But in fact, the participants did a little worse than predicted by Tjan's formula.

, it appears, hinges on recognizing the face's features more than the "holistic" picture they add up to create.

NYPD facial recognition technology identifies suspect from his Facebook picture - Daily Mail

By Nina Golgowski

A man suspected in a barbershop shooting has been apprehended after New York City detectives used a cutting-edge facial recognition software to nab his identity.

Police say a man was beaten and shot last week over a neighbourhood dispute in Queens while trying to get a haircut but the suspect initially made a near-clean getaway as police were left without a name.

'What are you going to do now?' the suspect allegedly shouted at his victim after walking in with a sawed-off shotgun beside an accomplice.

After a physical fight ensued, a bullet was fired at the back of the 39-year-old victim's head, grazing his skull. He required stitches but will survive.

The victim's brother who was also at the scene claimed to only know the shooter by his nickname of Armani but thought he may have a photo of him online.

'We let him log onto Facebook,' Sgt. Michael Ackerman from the precinct?s detective squad told the New York Post, and 'Lo and behold, he comes up with a picture of both [suspects] standing next to each other at a party.'

Authorities at the Real Time Crime Center in Manhattan fed the photo through the system and in less than an hour, a match appeared: The suspect's prior mug shot.

Jordan Rodriguez, 37, was arrested for the shooting about a day later in Brooklyn adding to his rap sheet of 12 previous arrests.

Calling itself the first of its kind in the country, the Real Time Crime Center has a database of mug shots, names and nicknames in the billions with the capacity to analyze each by use of its own search engine.

'It?s phenomenal,' Sgt Ackerman told the New York Daily News. 'Our leads were shut down ... I don?t even know if we?d have him identified yet.'

Police are still on the hunt for Rodriguez' accomplice, however, who they don't believe to be in their system.

Since Rodriguez's arrest Thursday, he has been charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and felony assault, among others.

Stating technology as holding the greatest short and long-term advances for the city's police force, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in an interview for his department, '...we're going to do everything  we can to make certain that New York remains in the lead in that regard.'
